SAMPLE POLICE AGENCY OFFICIAL USE LETTER

The following is a sample of an "Official Use Letter" required from a law enforcement agency in order to obtain full automatic weapons.  This letter must be on official department letterhead and signed by the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of that agency (Chief, Sheriff, Supervisory Agent-In-Charge, etc.)  This letter is required by weapons manufacturers (Bushmaster, Colt, Heckler & Koch, Fabrique Nationale, etc.) and BATFE.

(written on agency letterhead) January 1, 2004 Bushmaster Firearms 999 Roosevelt Trail Windham, Maine 04062 Dear Sir or Madam, This letter is to certify that the following items are being procured for official duty use only for use in law enforcement duties by the Anytown Police Department:      Two (2) Bushmaster XM15-E2S machine guns, caliber .223,      11.5" barrel, A2 flash suppressor, bayonet lug, A3 flat top      upper receiver with detachable carry handle (A2 sights),      4-position collapsible stock, safe/semi/full selector switches,      and three (3) 30-round law-enforcement-only high capacity      magazines per weapon. The Anytown Police Department is a qualified governmental entity and requests exemption from Federal Excise Tax.  Please find enclosed a signed Federal Excise Tax Exemption Form.
